Almost 8 years ago I moved to Saint Louis. My husband was raised here and this
was one of the first places I had to experience. We go annually. To experience
Crown Candy you need to know a couple of things: 1. The seating is tight. So
make sure you're prepared. The booths can seat four but you will feel like
you're on top of each other. 2. There may be a line. There is no standing room
in the building (there is but again, you'll be on top of each other). 3. If you
have more than 4 people in your party just know you may not be near each other
depending on the time of day. I state those three items so you can focus on
what is important: The malts/shakes and food. I love their BLT, Roast beef
cheddar melt. It's pretty big so you could split it. Same goes for the malts
and shakes. My husband and I order two different shakes and share. If you are
in Saint Louis I would recommend going to Crown Candy especially since it's
part of Saint Louis' history. The first time my husband brought me to his home
in St. Louis, he also brought me to Crown Candy Kitchen...sigh. If you like
feeling you're in a movie from around the 40's, you will love Candy Kitchen.
Crown is almost 100 years old. The interior contains layers from various
decades: authentic Coke memorabilia co-mingles with old menus posted on the
walls, a checkerboard linoleum floor and old white booths that are tight and
high with coat hooks on the end. You really get an authentic taste of the past,
for better or worse! Reviews need to break down the 3 components of the store:
Ice Cream (Soda Fountain) Candy Food It's too one-dimensional to rate Crown
simply on the food and service; it's a soda fountain. Crown's business is
selling nostalgia - mainly through ice cream & candy! If you come here
primarily for a sandwich, you've missed the point. This is a legit soda
fountain. The ice cream is made in-store, so it is unique. It's also rich and
dense, with 14% butterfat! Old school: In addition to hot fudge or caramel,
sundaes with things like fruit salad and pecan pralines rule the day. You can
get a chocolate phosphate or vanilla Coke. The shakes ($5) are huge and come
with their metal mixing cups. Chocolate here is very good, made in house and -
to my thinking - should be noted primarily for the antique molds they use. I
still have an Easter chocolate my husband got me: a bunny couple dressed in
clothes circa 1930's looking like they're going to the Easter Parade! But they
have 100's of old molds which cast the most beautiful and unusual designs. Any
chocolate freak needs to stop here for the molds alone. Crown is noted for
their nut clusters and old fashioned fruit candies they still sell...you have
to see the counter yourself! If you want food harking back to a mid-20th
century lunch counter done capably, eat here. I usually am here only for sweets
but when I eat food here, I know I'm eating a lunch fairly authentic to the
menu's inception. To modern eaters this would be an insipid ham sandwich or
innocuous tuna fish...but to nostalgia peeps, it's a little bit of fun. My
advice: don't come to Crown for stellar service or food...come for a taste of
the old days, and you'll leave satisfied.I love the food here. The grilled
cheese is impressive for a grilled cheese, and the ice cream is the best. I
usually get one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of black cherry as a sundae.
Their fudge is the thickest I've ever tasted. I try to get some of their candy
on the way out. The ambiance is the other reason I go there. They can use Coca-
Cola decor without looking tacky like many modern kitchens and some restaurants
do. This is because the items are vintage instead of vintage-inspired. The
place is small, which is part of the reason the lines are long- usually out the
door. The servers appear competent but not in any rush. Since it's still family
owned and operated, maybe they don't care that they don't serve as many people
as they might because they're still making a profit. There are times I would
like to go to Crown Candy to get something to go, or to have a meal with a
friend, but I know from past experience that time will not allow for it.
Waiting twenty or more minutes to place a to go order, or just as long to order
some candy, or an hour to be seated and another hour minimum to eat and get
out? Unfortunately, it's just not doable. I wish the owners would renovate some
other building in the city or perhaps in St. Louis County. There is no shortage
of them, and I'm sure wherever Crown Candy built, people would go (and maybe
not have to wait as long).Crown Candy is truly legendary here in St. Louis. I
realize that by giving Crown Candy a 1 out of 5 that I might be committing a
blasphemous act. But trust me-- it deserves a 1. My husband and I took my
brother and sister-in-law (who were in town from Georgia) for our first
experience at the restaurant. When we got there, there was a line out the door
waiting to eat... a good sign we thought! The line moved INCREDIBLY slowly
because the waiters did not know how to turn over tables (checks would just sit
there) and busing a table took fooorreeeveer! When we finally got a seat, the
waitress gave us a cup of water (a little bigger than a shot glass) and said
she'd be right back to take our order. 15 minutes later, she finally took our
order. As a table, we ordered milk shakes, chilli dogs, a roast beef sandwich
and a grilled cheese. The milk shakes were truly great. The food was sub par at
best. This place has the potential to be great--the atmosphere is really
unique, the menu is good... but the servers are truly awful. They had their
face peirced, sloppy style and lots of attitude. Not to mention-- there were a
lot of them! While we waited at our table to be served, I watched as two guys
just stood there at the counter and stared at us. My advice: If you MUST go
here, go for a shake in the middle of the day. I wouldn't eat lunch here. There
are SO many great sandwich shops in St. Louis to waste your time.I've been here
a few times. Crown Candy Kitchen is decent, and yet, such a horrible idea at
the same time. Here's why: - After eating you feel bloated and overwhelmed with
a sense of guilt. It has that effect on everyone I know who has gone here. If
you have a malt shake (which I might add are really good) and one of their
heavy sandwiches, you're looking at a solid 3 hours in the bathroom once you
have allowed it to do its thing in your system. You will hate yourself after
over consuming. I highly recommend to pack up half of it before you even start
your meal just so you won't hate yourself later. Plus it will do well for a
second meal. Avoid the trauma with this tip. - If you don't buy any of the
candy, get a malt or milkshake. They're delish. I don't recommend trying the
challenge of getting a free meal by drinking 5 malt shakes like the guy did off
Man vs. Food. Malt and milkshake flavors are traditional with the seasonal
flavor thrown in. Don't expect them to be too adventurous. - Snail slow
service. Don't expect to get in and out in 30 minutes. In additional to the
line out the door, add an additional 2 hours to your visit simply because it is
that bad. It doesn't have to be that way, but for some reason every visit I've
had, they've never changed. - BLT is hit or miss. I've had it where it was good
and other times not so good. I guess you have to take the risk yourself to find
out. The atmosphere is fun and welcoming. Enjoy the hand made candies and the
old memoribilia that takes you back because it goes waaaaaaay back to circa
1913 when it first opened in North St. Louis City.
