I still remember the first time I became interested in computers: I was nine and it was during a literature class in which we were reading a short text about the most famous hacker’s takedown, Kevin Mitnick. I thought the story was thrilling and fascinating. It made me think about how computers work inside, and so I started to ask around and be curious: it was the beginning of my passion for this science.
Also, my whole life I have been good with numbers. I have several medals in mathematic competitions, some of them even international. At some point I thought I wanted to be a mathematician, but before getting to college I realized that I did not love the subject as much as I did love computers, which I thought were more practical. While I was a teenager I taught myself the programming language C and that way I discovered how huge and complex the bit’s world is. At that time I was in high school studying the International Baccalaureate, having in mind that it was very possible that I was going to finish my studies abroad. I have always liked to know other cultures, I feel comfortable around new people and I get bored easily of doing the same things, so traveling is not a problem for me, but a pleasure.
Then I started the computers science career with a lot of enthusiasm. I got into the Computers Faculty in the Polytechnic University of Madrid, which is rated the best in Spain and one of the best in Europe. Through four years studying there I obtained great scores in most of the classes, not only because I am a good student but because I love what I study. In these years I have obtained my best scores in mathematic related classes. I believe I have good qualities to come up with new algorithms.
Moreover, for the past year I have been working with a marketing company developing their web environment. This job has given me a lot of experience in web developing, even though I did not like it very much because in the long term it was just routine, and I was not making any real difference. I believe computers are changing the world for good and I want to be part of that change. I have always been inspired by stories like the way Google tries to make their products, to help humanity. In my opinion there is still a lot of thing to do with computers. In fact, many times I think there are so many that I don’t even know which ones to do, because I love them all.
Besides, I have some projects on my own, involving mostly web development. I have designed various web pages for personal purposes and a few applications so I am used to most of the tools to develop. I am also very comfortable programming in many languages, so that it is no longer a drawback for me.
On the other hand, I am a very challenging person and I always wanted to put myself to the test in whatever I have done. This makes me a perfect fit for computers, because I think it is impossible to get to study everything related to it in one life. So, I am always looking for new things to get my hands into, and I think this master is the best thing for me to do right now. I have the necessary experience in the field to be successful and I think it is the best preparation I can have to get into the business world after it. Once I knew about these graduates the IIT offers with a partnership with my university, I just fell in love with the idea of going there. I know that it is going to be tough, but also that I am going to learn a lot and I may expand my possibilities.
I have chosen the specialization in networks and computers security because it gets to study the deep layer of computing and it can give me a better chance to get to dazzle. Nevertheless, it was really hard to choose between all the specializations the ITM offers; they are all pretty attractive to me.
Therefore, I really want to take this master. I have been waiting to be able to go there for years, I saved the money, I got the scores and so I am very excited to have the chance to study in the USA. I hope you feel the same way and let me in.
Thank you very much. Sincerely,
Fernando Seror García
