Below are instructions for participating in a digital blockade, aka a distributed denial of service attack, against the DUG web site during the November DUG East hydrofracking conference. The idea is to overwhelm their web server with so many automated requests that it crashes, or at least becomes unable to handle them all.

SECURITY NOTE: This shit is technically illegal, and while it's very unlikely that you'll get arrested for it, you might not want to use your own internet connection/IP address. You can always go to an open wifi hot spot or use a school computer or something like that.

1. Download the Low Orbit Ion Cannon at http://sourceforge.net/projects/loic/ Mac and Linux users should get Java LOIC at http://sourceforge.net/projects/javaloic/

2. Unzip it and start it up. If your antivirus complains shut it off, LOIC is harmless (to your computer, anyway). Java LOIC note: If it doesn't run when you click the icon, open a console and type java -jar /path/to/JavaLOIC.jar

3. Fill in the following information. Anything not mentioned here just leave as is.
For LOIC -
URL: dugeast.com (and then click the "Lock on" button)
Port: 80
Method: TCP
Threads: 10, or 20 if you're on a fast university connection
Timeout: 9001
Message: HOWDY, TURDBLOSSOM!!!
Uncheck the 'Wait for reply' box.

For Java LOIC -
IP Address: 65.71.36.135
Port, method (called 'protocol') and threads are the same as above. The rest is automatic.

4. WAIT UNTIL 12:30 PM EASTERN STANDARD TIME ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2! Srsly, this will work a lot better if we hit them hard all at once with no warning.

5. FIRE ALL LAZORS!!! (Click the 'IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER' button in LOIC. For JavaLOIC it's just 'FIRE!!!' JavaLOIC users should ignore the 'GET ORDERS' button. If the 'Successful Requests' number isn't increasing that probably means it's working, but restart the ion cannon occasionally just to be sure it hasn't crashed.)

6. Pop open a kombucha and relax as capitalism crumbles around you. If the rev hasn't started by 12:30 PM on Thursday go ahead and turn off the ion cannon.
